In the past, they called it AyaUma, whose translation from Kichwa means spirit head. It is the spirit that guides and orients, the one that leads the way in organizing its community.

After the arrival of the Spanish and with them the evangelization, all the magical-spiritual Andean deities are considered negative, and their name changes to Diablo Uma. However, the essence of this character is closely related to the Andean Cosmovision. His face covered by a mask with 2 faces represents the duality and complementarity of opposites: man-woman, day-night, positive-negative, up-down, cold-heat, sun-moon. Furthermore, he has two faces because this prevents the character from turning his back to the Sun, his main deity.

The masked man wears zamarro, which signifies his intrinsic relationship with nature and also strength and power. Twelve thick fringes emerge from the mask that represent his elevated spirituality and, according to other scholars, symbolize the months of the year. The AyaUma, called ChakiCapitan, is the one who opens the way in dance, he can play wind and string instruments, such as churos, flutes and rondines, as well as the guitar. He carries an axial in his hand, which serves to maintain order, which signifies his high authority and they generally dance barefoot or with espadrilles.

Today he can be seen in each of the festive troupes of the indigenous peoples. However, he is the main character of the Inti Raymi in Cayambe, Tabacundo and the entire province of Imbabura in Ecuador; the most important Andean celebration, which takes place on the summer solstice, June 21. He is the one who provides the force of the dance, the one who forces all the dancers to remain active and within the established order.
