The Rucos are part of the local festive identity of the Valleys – Pichincha, Ecuador. In addition to continuing the tradition of the festive character, the workers' protest is commemorated through his clothing.

He wears black pants, a white shirt and a black poncho that has a red fringe. He covers his head with a white helmet and his face with a cloth or mixed mask of the same color and in his hand he carries a bull. This tradition also endures in the towns of Alangasí, Píntag, Conocoto and La Merced.

Elías Ñato works to preserve tradition in Amaguaña. There he leads a group of 30 dancers between five and 38 years old to keep alive the ancestral dance that he learned from his grandparents.
A ruco is an older person, an elder or a mayoral. In the dance, he represents the foreman and it is believed that the character began to be forged when a textile factory began operating on the Chillo Jijón hacienda. According to “Ñato”, at that time people used the costume as a satirical representation of the owner of the land, Jacinto Jijón y Caamaño.

RUCOS is a work part of a series that seeks to highlight the facts, milestones, myths, icons, signs and symbols of resistance that are still present not only in the beautiful stories behind them and that are passed from generation to generation, but also They are that irreverent legacy for the new generations translated into ritual, revelry and rebellious joy such as popular festivals. I want to conclude at the end of the research-creation process that our living cultures through these symbols of resistance invite us to a very new insurgency.
